Ken Vandermark Nate Wooley Duo Live

Location

ACUD MACHT NEU | Berlin

Date

06 November 2017

ACUD MACHT NEU proved to be a great SCENE for the GENIUS to come out of the great performers Yorgos Dimitriadis, Ken Vandermark and Nate Wooley.
Highly sensitive, skilfully emotional and artistic playing by all three performers.
A mixture of intimate expression as well as explosive energy exchanged with a great audience that came down to Prenzlauer Berg on that Monday night.
In the first part an electroacoustic set by Yorgos Dimitriadis showcased a complete control over microphone feedback on the drums and cymbals, creating synchronized counter rhythms and textures to his playing on the acoustic kit.

In the second part Ken Vandermark and Nate Wooley performed their new duo material which they performed for the first time the day before during the radio recording at Cashmere Radio.

It was a good experiment to see how the same performance from the two musicians, differentiates from itself in the presence of an intimately expressive audience.

In Ken’s own words..: “The set at ACUD began with greater activity and intensity, and just amplified its ferocity from there, probably inspired by the energy coming from the audience. The new compositions are well structured and create areas of investigation that are not always about speed, density, and volume- there are many passages that focus on aspects of non-pitched texture, silence, and counter-intuitive rhythmic angularity as well.

The duo essentially performed two long pieces from an upcoming LP, to be released soon.

First track was written by Nate Wooley and as Nate explains “is based on an idea of John Cage who wrote a piece as his partner, Merce Cunningham wanted to dance to an Eric Satie opera, but… Eric Satie people said NO! And so all the dancers have learned how to dance based on the opera but the didn’t care where the notes were.
So Cage rewrote all the rhythms to the opera with his new notes so they can get around and pay the Satie people and it became his new song… So I thought …wouldn’t it be cool to take all of his notes and strip all the rhythms out and rewrite it in another way?..”
As for the naming of the composition Nate explains:
“John cage called his new track Cheap imitation and as mine is one step down on the food chain.. its called Deeply discounted “
Second track written by Ken Vandermark and being inspired by the work of Canadian experimental filmmaker Michael Snow for the rhythm and sound aspects of his work, is called Sequences of Michael Snow.
