Valia Calda + MOb trio

Scenius [at] Athens presents a night dedicated to the new jazz scene, with experimental folk psych-jazz band from London, Valia Calda, joined by the Greek jazz punk band MOb trio.

The event takes place on Tuesday, April 16 at the ex-knitting factory PLYFA,in Votanikos.

As part of their European tour, Valia Calda come to Athens to present their second album entitled ‘Homeland’ (2023, Deep Mountain Records).
Redefining the idea of ​​homeland and immigration is the central musical quest of Valia Calda that inspires and converses with elementary songs of the Greek diaspora, the traditional music of Epirus, with psychedelic jazz, punk aesthetics and free improvisations.
The five-member jazz group was founded in 2013 by the Ziarkas brothers, Nikos on the guitar and the double bassist Theodoris. Companions the three innovators and featured musicians: James Allsopp on saxophone, Sam Warner on trumpet and drummer Gaspar Sena.

A little earlier, the explosive jazz trio MOb will perform on the Plyfa stage. Having just released their 1st album titled ‘MOb 1’ (2024, Veego Records), they have already made an impression internationally.
MOb trio represent the mob, a name that suggests a dynamism and a lack of static, qualities that characterize the trio’s moods during composition.
Their music is described as a crossroads between electronic melodious jazz, kraut, filmic and exploratory post punk. Synthesizers, effects, loops, drones and tonal deviations share a primary role in creating the trio’s unparalleled soundscape. The compositions of the group are mainly based on open forms, using both tonic and non-tonic linear material, while improvisation tends to balance between producing melodic material and creating multifaceted sonic atmospheres.
The MOb trio are Marios Valinakis (Saxophone & live electronics), Alexandros Delis (Bass, guitar & effects) and Panagiotis Kostopoulos (Drums).
